02/03/2022 City Manager’s Update
February 3, 2022
Greetings, all. Our Putah Creek tractor is lit up for Valentine’s Day! Please check out the specials offered by Winters businesses. You’ll find a wide variety of gifts, mementos, and memory making opportunities to share with your favorite people.
Please Note:
- Yup, tax preparation season has arrived… The Yolo County Children's Alliance has scheduled its annual Voluntary Tax Income Assistance program (VITA). Qualifying residents can work with certified staff members to prepare and file their taxes, either in-person, or virtually. VITAservices are available in English, Spanish, Farsi, and Russian, and appointments can be made Monday-Thursday, and some
Saturdays. Residents who earned less than $65,000 in 2021 may be eligible for free tax preparation service. Please call (916) 572-0560 to schedule an appointment.
- The December Fire Department Newsletter is available here.
Don’t Miss Out!
- The Yolo County Library System honors Black History Month for the month of February. The national theme for 2022 – Black Health and Wellness – aims to uplift the contributions of Black American
medical and folk practitioners while addressing inequities and amplifying opportunities for holistic betterment. More information about the Wednesday evening movie and discussion program, suggested readings, and activities is available here.
Residents can also visit the Library’s social media channels every weekday in February to find spotlights on Black wellness resources, books written by Black authors, and notable Black residents of Yolo County past and present, including historical information from the Yolo County Archives and Yolo County Historical Collection.
- Speaking of, the winter edition of the Yolo County Friends of the Archives newsletter is available online at friendsyca.org/news/newsletter. Related to expanding our cultural awareness, check out upcoming exhibits in the area recognizing Women’s History Month (March, and check out “Gertrude’s Oaks”) and Native American Veterans of foreign wars.
- Don’t forget to order up to 4 COVID home test kits at covidtests.gov. And remember, it takes several days after exposure to develop enough viral load to register positive on a rapid test; otherwise, you might receive a false negative. Test kit boxes should not be opened to sell individual tests.
City Hall Shout Out!
- To retiring Director Shelly Gunby. We were just notified the City of Winters FY 21-22 Operating budget received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association. This was our first ever digital budget, which is available on the City’s website here. Shelly has received this award for years….She has big shoes to fill…
- A collective shout out to the Senior Center Furniture and Fixtures Fundraising group (Marlene Bell, Karen May and Sandy Vickrey plus Council liaison Pierre Neu) and all the donors who have contributed toward outfitting the new senior center. The Yolo Community Foundation is holding over $33,600 as part of this fundraising campaign. For more information, please visit https://www.wintersseniorcenter.com/ .
Upcoming Council Meeting
The next meeting is February 15.
Woot Woot!
The Senior Armada sailed into City Hall on Tuesday afternoon. Over 20 seniors helped us label over 4,300 postcards to every registered voter in the City of Winters. The postcards notify people of our change in election date from June to November 2022. They finished the task in less than an hour!!! More people showed up than signed up, so my apologies for missing anyone. A huge thank you to the Senior Armada and specifically to those below! And thank you, Marlene, for coordinating the labeling party in rapid fashion.
